What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the science and art of using natural plant extracts, such as essential oils, hydrosols, and carrier oils, to heal the body, mind and spirit holistically. Aromatherapy may enhance well being as part of a healthy lifestyle, by offering therapeutic benefits for a range of physical and physiological conditions.

The word “aromatherapy”, or aromathérapie  in French, was devised by the French perfumer and chemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé in 1937. As a matter of fact, aromatic plants have been used in various ways to perfume and to heal since time began.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils, highly aromatic substances extracted from different parts of a plant, are a complex make-up of volatile chemical components.

How does aromatherapy work?

The effects of essential oils occur on multiple levels. They exert pharmacological effects on the systems of the body, when absorbed through the skin; the aromas of essential oils, when inhaled, travel from olfactory system to limbic system, influencing the mood, memories and hormones.

Aromatherapy can be carried out in different forms, such as diffusion, direct inhalation, massage, bath, and more.

How to use essential oils safely?

“All natural” does not mean there are no safety rules, as the essential oil in a bottle is 50-100 times more concentrated than in the plant. Consult a certified aromatherapist if you encounter any issues when using essential oils.
